The 5 Safest Sunscreens in 2025 (We Scored 297 Products)

Rankings

86% of Sunscreens Have At Least One Flagged Ingredient

We scored 297 sunscreens in our database, checking every ingredient against known hazards β€” endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, irritants, environmental toxins. Only 42 came out clean. The rest? At least one ingredient that raised a red flag.

The most common problem isn't dramatic. It's not that your sunscreen gives you cancer. It's the quiet stuff β€” endocrine disruptors in 79 products, environmental toxins (reef-killing chemicals) in 170, and skin irritants in nearly all of them.

Here are the 5 sunscreens that scored a perfect 9/10 β€” no flagged ingredients, no compromises.

The Top 5

1. Banana Boat Baby Mineral β€” Score: 9/10

Zero flagged ingredients. This one uses zinc oxide as its active filter β€” a mineral that sits on top of skin rather than absorbing into it. No oxybenzone, no octinoxate, no fragrance. It's marketed for babies, but the ingredient list is what every adult sunscreen should look like.

2. Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen β€” Score: 9/10

Another zinc oxide-based formula. Blue Lizard built their reputation on this β€” mineral-only, no chemical UV filters. The ingredient list is short, which is almost always a good sign. Fewer ingredients = fewer chances for something problematic.

3. Badger Sport Mineral Sunscreen β€” Score: 9/10

Badger uses only 5 active and inactive ingredients. Five. Most sunscreens have 20-30. The base is sunflower oil, beeswax, and zinc oxide. That's essentially it. It feels thick on application β€” the tradeoff for keeping the ingredient list this clean.

4. Badger Adventure Sport 50 SPF β€” Score: 9/10

Same philosophy, higher SPF. Badger appears twice on this list because they genuinely have one of the cleanest formulations in the industry. No fragrance, no dimethicone, no chemical filters.

5. Badger Daily Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 β€” Score: 9/10

Their everyday formula. Less water-resistant than the sport version but same ingredient integrity. If you want a daily-wear mineral sunscreen without thinking about it β€” this is it.

What These Winners Have in Common

The pattern is obvious once you see it:

  • All mineral β€” zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide only
  • No chemical UV filters β€” no oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, or homosalate
  • No fragrance β€” "parfum" is one of the most common irritants we flag
  • Short ingredient lists β€” under 15 ingredients each
  • No dimethicone β€” the silicone that shows up in 60% of sunscreens (minor environmental concern)

What's Wrong with the Other 255?

The most common flagged ingredients in sunscreens from our data:

  • Irritants found in 442 instances across 297 products (some products have multiple)
  • Environmental toxins in 170 products β€” primarily oxybenzone and octinoxate, which kill coral reefs
  • Endocrine disruptors in 79 products β€” chemicals that mess with your hormones
  • Carcinogens in 8 products β€” thankfully rare, but still present

The worst offender? Oxybenzone. It scores 7/10 on our hazard scale β€” endocrine disruptor, environmental harm, and allergen. It's in 40 products in our database. Hawaii and Key West banned it for reef destruction. But plenty of brands still use it.

"But Mineral Sunscreens Leave a White Cast"

Yeah, they do. That's the tradeoff. The top 5 on this list will leave some level of white residue, especially on darker skin tones.

If that's a dealbreaker, look for tinted mineral sunscreens β€” they add iron oxides to counteract the white cast while keeping the zinc oxide base. We didn't find any that scored 9/10 (the tints add ingredients), but several hit 8/10.

What About Neutrogena and the Big Brands?

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer scored 6/10. Not terrible, but not great. They use chemical UV filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate) that are effective but come with endocrine disruption concerns. Garnier Ombrelle? Also 6/10. Same chemical filter approach.

These aren't dangerous β€” they're just not as clean as mineral options. If you're choosing between wearing these or wearing nothing, wear the sunscreen. Sun damage is a bigger risk than trace chemical exposure. But if you have the option to choose a mineral formula? Do that.

Bottom Line

Go mineral. The data is clear β€” every sunscreen in our top 5 uses zinc oxide as its primary filter and keeps the rest of the ingredient list minimal. Banana Boat Baby Mineral, Blue Lizard Sensitive, and anything from Badger are your safest bets.
